Hope Lutheran celebrates 100 years with 3 events

by John Haselow

Cleveland Heights-From humble beginnings early in the 20th century to a future that looks bright in the 21st, Hope Lutheran Church will hold three special celebrations of its 100th anniversary: 1909-2009.

Hope Lutheran is a unique congregation that truly reflects the ethnic and lifestyle diversity of the times. Hope's membership includes racially diverse families, single people, youths, elderly, and gay men and women from the entire Cleveland metropolitan area. To create awareness with individuals and families who desire and are looking for a welcoming, diverse and inclusive community, Hope Lutheran has adopted a strategic branding strategy.

This new branding, "Diversity Thrives Here!" serves as a launch pad for the congregation's preparations to celebrate Hope's 100th Anniversary this year.

"To our knowledge, there isn't another Lutheran congregation in the Cleveland area that is quite as diverse, welcoming and inclusive," says Rev. Don King, Hope's pastor. "We embrace diversity and the celebration of all members of the whole people of God, and we're confident that there are individuals and families who would have interest in making their church home here." Hope Lutheran's first 100 years will be celebrated Sunday, May 3 with Word and sacrament at 9:30 am. The Rev. Richard B.

Sutter, son of Hope (a member of a congregation who enters the ministry) will preach. A fellowship luncheon will follow.

The celebration will continue on Sunday, June 14 with Word and sacrament at 9:30 am. Hope's current pastor, the Rev. Don King will preach. A casual fellowship BBQ luncheon will follow.

Looking forward to the future, Hope Lutheran will continue the celebration of its 100th anniversary on Sunday, July 12, the date closest to its first worship service in 1909. Northeast Ohio Synod Bishop Rev. Elizabeth Eaton will preach.

A new time capsule to be opened in 2034 will be dedicated at the end of the service. A key component will be hand-written greetings from all of the 2009 members to the future members of Hope. A fellowship luncheon will follow.

"Hope Lutheran," notes King, "has been a home, a haven, a source of comfort, and a place of challenge to thousands of God's children. As we honor our past, examine the present, and look to the future, we invite all to join with us as we celebrate Hope Lutheran Church: the next century."

Rev. Don King can be reached at 216371-5252, or by e-mail at hopeluth @sbcglobal.net. Hope Lutheran's web site is www.hopelutheran-clehts.com.
